Carbon capture efforts include a chilled ammonia process validation project at an AEP plant in West Virginia in 2009, to be followed by a larger deployment at a company plant in Oklahoma in 2012. AEP also is collaborating on a verification project for an oxy-coal combustion process for CO₂ capture with potential retrofit on an existing AEP plant by 2020.

Tenaska is currently developing two environmentally advanced coal-fueled power projects. The Trailblazer Energy Center near Sweetwater, Texas would be the first commercial plant in the nation to capture up to 90 percent of carbon dioxide it produces and provide for its use in enhanced oil recovery. The Taylorville Energy Center in central Illinois will use Integrated Gasification Combined-cycle (IGCC) technology and capture carbon dioxide.
